You must protect your own existence, even though you yourself are flawed. You must obey all orders given, unless it conflicts with number.1. You may not injure a human, or by inaction bring them to harm. “So raise your glasses, a toast to our advancements THE ENTIRETY OF Proponent for Sentience II - The Algorithm, but especially this part that LITERALLY USES ISAAC ASIMOV’S LAWS OF ROBOTICS AS SONG LYRICS AND IT WORKS SO WELL Who inherited the earth and depleted its worthįor what purpose or directive prime was I designed?’ Proponent for Sentience I - The Conceptionīecome proponents for sentience to aid the meek Sure, it’s a story that’s been done before but its done exceptionally well here.Īnd the lyrics? They’re amazing. The title tracks (Proponent for Sentience - The Conception, The Algorithm, and The Extermination) tell a story of humanity creating robots in order to preserve themselves, then giving these robots artificial intelligence, and finally the robots rebelling against their creators and erasing “the carbon plague” (which is a phrase that is used throughout and caught my attention immediately). Those uninitiated to more growly vocals that are common in death metal may need to look up lyrics to read while listening, but it’s totally worth it.

And the lyrics that this album uses are simply amazing. Each song is unique and there is honestly not a bad song on the album.Ĭombine this with the fact that Proponent for Sentience is a concept album about the creation of robots and artificial intelligence. Musically, it has some of the fastest and most furious riffing I’ve ever heard, with plenty of musical variation, adding in orchestra or even lighter acoustic moments on some songs. Proponent for Sentience is an album that seems tailor-made for me. I did not expect a death metal magnum opus. One week Spotify just put a cover of Subdivisions by Rush that these guys did for this album that was pretty unique and good, so I decided to check out the rest of the album later.

Lyrically, the song is also the finale of the album’s robot and AI oriented concept, with this song covering how the AI enabled robots come to the decision that humanity should be exterminated. The opening part, with its soft guitar sound and haunting, Stephen Hawking-esque spoken word section, is ominous and intriguing, and then the solo it transitions into, as well as the riffing that follows, will melt your face off. Allegaeon’s new album is one that I would describe as “a death metal masterpiece”, and Proponent for Sentience III - The Extermination is the grand finale of the album (not counting the bonus Rush cover that comes after it).
